Pom Klementieff (born 3 May 1986) is a
French actress from France. She studied at the Cours Florent drama school in
Paris and has been featured in such films as Loup (2009), Sleepless Night
(2011) and Hacker's Game (2015). She is the character Mantis in the Marvel
Cinematic Universe films Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). Avengers:
Infinity War (2018). Avengers: Endgame (2019). Pom Klementieff was raised in
Quebec City to a Korean father and a French-Russian mom. He was employed as
consul with the French government. Her father was a painter Eugene Klementieff.
Because it sounded similar to the Korean words for "spring" or
"tiger" her parents gave their daughter the name Pom. Klementieff was
in Canada for a year prior to her family went on a long trip due to her
father's employment. They resided in Japan as well as the Ivory Coast, before
settling in France. Klementieff's father, who died from cancer at age 5 was her
mother. Additionally, she suffered from schizophrenia and couldn't care for her
children. Klementieff was raised with her paternal uncle and aunt. Her uncle,
who she described as "like [her] father" died at the age of 18 years
old. Her older brother, who committed suicide seven years later, was her aunt.
Klementieff had the opportunity to attend law school following the passing of
her uncle. However, she didn't find this profession attractive. In France, she
worked as a salesperson and waitress. She started acting when she was 19, at
the Cours Florent theatre school in Paris. After finishing her studies she was
selected for an acting competition that offered her two years of tuition free
with some of the best instructors at the school. Klementieff was the
stepdaughter of Catherine Deneuve in Apres lui (2006) the film that was her
first professional acting gig. Three days were spent filming her scenes. One
scene featured Klementieff pushing someone down the set staircase, only to
fall. Gael Morel saved that shot for the final film. Her first role as a lead
actor was in Loup (2009), a French film about a tribe of reindeer herders in
the Siberian mountains. Klementieff filmed for hours at an isolated camp away
from the closest village. The temperature dropped to below zero during filming.
