Mary McDonnell
Mary McDonnell, a two-time
Oscar(r),-nominated actress, is well known for her performances on screen in
contemporary and historical roles. She also has a lengthy history of acting
roles on stage and screen. Mary Eileen McDonnell is a Pennsylvania-born actress.
She was the child of Eileen (Mundy) the Irish-American computer consultant, as
well as John McDonnell. She was born in Ithaca and graduated from Fredonia
State University of New York. She later attended drama school , and was
admitted to the famous Long Wharf Theatre Company on the East Coast. Her
breakthrough film role was in Dances with Wolves (1990) by Kevin Costner. She
played the character "Stands with a Fist", a Sioux Indian-raised
white woman. Her first Academy Award nomination for the role. McDonnell's film
credits also include Lawrence Kasdan's Grand Canyon (1991) & Mumford
(1999) as well as opposite veteran actors like Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier
and Ben Kingsley; Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day (1996) (starring Will
Smith); the famous art house cult film Donnie Darko (192001) as well as Margin
Call (2011). This won her the Robert Altman Awards at the 2012 Independent
Spirit Awards. On the small screen, McDonnell starred in four seasons of Syfy
Network's award-winning series Battlestar Galactica (2004) in her critically
acclaimed performance as President Laura Roslin. She earned an Emmy nomination
for her recurring guest role in the TV show ER (1994). TNT's acclaimed drama
series Major Crimes (2012) stars her as Captain Sharon Raydor. It is
McDonnell's second season and she received a nomination for a Primetime
Emmy(r). McDonnell was awarded an Best Actress Academy Award(r) nomination as
well as an Golden Globe nomination for her performance as the paraplegic
soap-opera star in John Sayles' critically acclaimed film, Passion Fish (1992).
